Haringey Council is currently consulting on budget proposals for the year ahead. This budget is set to help Haringey Labour “build a fairer Haringey” even though Haringey has seen huge cuts in funding since 2010.

In Haringey, Government grant funding under the Tories and Lib Dems has reduced by £124 million, a cut of 62%, whilst the population and their needs continue to grow. The 2020/21 budget has been planned in the context of severe ongoing budget pressures, as a result of 10 years of austerity.

Nevertheless, Haringey Labour are committed to make our borough greener, cleaner and fairer and this year’s budget delivers on a number of these priorities.

Haringey Labour is fighting housing injustice by improving the quality of private rented housing, intervening proactively, by introducing selective licensing, and moving forward Haringey Labour’s Manifesto commitment plans to deliver 1,000 additional council homes.

We will also bring forward plans to pay all Council contracted care staff the London Living Wage, meaning decent pay for carers and the delivery of one of our key manifesto commitments two years ahead of schedule.

This year’s budget continues to provide up to 100% Council Tax discount for our least well off resident and Invests £50 million in school buildings over the next 5 years, to ensure every child and young person is educated in a modern building in a safe environment.

Furthermore, we are taking real action on climate change, launching an ambitious tree-planting programme to bring the tree canopy to at least 20% across the borough. We will also invest £3.2 million in ‘School Streets’, to create safer, less polluted environments around our schools.

Haringey Council is consulting upon our proposed budget until Sunday 16th January 2020, to have your say go to www.haringey.gov.uk/budget.

Cllr Adje, Cabinet Member for Finance and Strategic Regeneration said:

“Every year it gets more challenging to make savings due to relentless Tory cuts, despite this, our budget will help to make Haringey a fairer place and deliver real change for residents in the borough.

“This year’s budget helps deliver on our key manifesto commitments, including paying the London Living Wage to Care workers, investing £50million into school buildings, and over £3million for School streets.”
