“I’m proud that we’ve defended this scheme for yet another year, which means that around 5600 families will pay no or less Council tax this year.” Cllr Charles Adje, Cabinet Member for Finance and Strategic Regenaration

Haringey Labour has defended the Council Tax Reduction Scheme (CTRS) for the coming financial year, despite the impact of Conservative and Liberal Democrat cuts to the Councils’ budget.

At the Full Council meeting on Tuesday 26th November, Members voted to agree to the CTRS levels for the year ahead, these are council tax discounts for the poorest families in Haringey and help to ensure that the greatest weight is carried by the broadest shoulders.

These reforms were extended last year and mean that the maximum level of Council Tax discount for the poorest families in Haringey is now 100 per cent. The measures, benefit around 5600 lower-income families and lift 3,000 families out of council tax altogether.

This is even though Haringey’s budget has been cut by £122 million since 2010 – equal to £405 per person, putting further strains on local government’s ability to provide services for the most vulnerable residents.

Councillor Charles Adje, Cabinet Member for Finance and Strategic Regeneration said:

“This scheme redresses some of the unfairness of Council Tax and redistribute the burden to those with the broadest shoulders. It protects those most in need in our borough and is central to our commitment to building a fairer Haringey.

“I’m proud that we’ve defended this scheme for yet another year, which means that around 5600 families will pay no or less Council tax this year.”
