Labour MP for Hornsey and Wood Green, Catherine West, launched a petition demanding the Conservative government to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in Haringey.

She presented it to 10 Downing Street on Monday 10th of December alongside Joseph Ejifor, Labour leader of Haringey Council.

The petition, which was signed by more than 2,000 people, urged the government to protect the rights of EU citizens in Haringey, especially in the event of a no-deal Brexit. In addition, it called for the prime minister to refrain from using divisive anti-immigrant rhetoric.

She argued that the 42,000 Haringey residents from the EU were ‘our friends, family and neighbours, and a valued part of our diverse community’. She went on to claim that ‘EU citizens have come here to look after our sick, teach our children and contribute to our country, just as so many British citizens have gone to other EU countries.’

Theresa May’s original Brexit deal specified that EU citizens living in the United Kingdom would have to pay £65 each for settled status. Shortly before her U-turn on this decision, Haringey Council offered to pay for the applications of its 250 EU staff.

Haringey Labour pledged that it was ‘committed to defending the rights of EU citizens living and working in our borough in light of the uncertainty around the Government’s botched Brexit negotiations.’
