Haringey UNISON Supports Council Decision to Top Up Carers Wages 

Haringey Carers will now receive an hourly uplift in the form of a bonus, which will be worth up to £1000 for the period of April-June.

Cllr Joseph Ejiofor, Leader of Haringey Council said:

“I’m really pleased to have worked so closely with Haringey UNISON, and to be able to deliver this essential uplift to carers during this challenging time.

“Last month we were excited to announce the London Living Wage for council care contract, but regrettably COVID-19 has caused a delay in the new arrangements. It’s vitally important that we do not cause upheaval for care workers and their clients at this time so we have opted to pay the uplift directly, and will push ahead with implementing the Living Wage as soon as possible.”

We’re pleased that Tottenham Hotspur have reversed their decision to furlough non-playing staff on 80% of their salary and will no longer be accessing the government’s Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to pay their workers.

Instead Board members will take a pay cut whilst Club employees such as cleaners and retail workers will receive their full pay for April and May.

The decision came after weeks of sustained pressure from supporters, top players, Council Leader Joseph Ejiofor and both Haringey and Tottenham Labour Parties.

It is important that the Club’s decision to pay non-playing staff their full salaries in April and May does not turn into job losses in June and July, so we will be keeping a close eye on the situation.

St Ann’s Mutual Aid network has teamed up with the Friends of Chestnuts Park to put a banner up outside St Ann’s Hospital to Thank NHS workers.

Ceri Williams, St Ann’s Labour Branch Chair (& Chair of the Friends of Chestnuts Park) has been active in the mutual aid network working with local residents to deliver leaflets to neighbours, managing street level what’s app groups and publicising the Thursday evening #ClapfortheNHS.

Right across Haringey, Labour members have been central in the organising of mutual aid groups to help the vulnerable in our wards. If you would like to get involved in your local mutual aid group, a list of local what’s app groups can be found here.

Easter Bunny makes a visit to Hornsey

The Coronavirus outbreak has had many impacts on our community and has hit some of the most vulnerable people the hardest. Hornsey Councillors, Adam, Dana and Elin have been working hard with the community to ensure that as much support as possible can be provided to those in need. As part of that package of support, there was a visit from the Easter Bunny – with Cllr Adam Jogee, Father Ben, the Vicar at Holy Innocents Church, and local residents securing a stack of Easter eggs that could be donated to those families doing it tough.

Young Labour set up politics reading group

With schools closed except for children of key workers, young members in Haringey have used lockdown to establish a reading group. Last week’s discussion asked whether the ideas of Marx and Engels in the Communist Manifesto still had relevance to society today.

Becky, organiser of the reading group and Hornsey and Wood Green Youth Officers said

‘We’re all spending a lot of time inside at the moment and, as we’ve got a lot of politics nerds in our group, I thought it would be fun to spend some of our increased free-time sharing knowledge about how different people think about making the world a better place. Its been a great way to come out of lock-down slightly more educated and for us all to keep sane by coming together once a week to keep in touch and have a chat about politics.’
