Local campaigner, Seema Chandwani, was yesterday elected as the new Councillor in West Green Ward, Tottenham.

Cllr Chandwani achieved 1273 votes, over double the amount of the second placed candidate.

The election was won thanks to a hard fought campaign by local Labour members. Over 2000 conversations were had with local residents and every single door within West Green was knocked on.

In her acceptance speech, Cllr Chandwani committed to donating £1,000 a year of her councillor allowance to a Tottenham Youth Fund with the aim making sure young people in Tottenham know that their community cares. Her donation will be matched by a further £1,000 from Tottenham MP, David Lammy.

Alongside deputy leader Cllr Emine Ibrahim, Seema will launch the Nilgun Canver Leadership Programme for young women of ethnic minority backgrounds from Haringey. The aim is to equip them to challenge and campaign against the social injustices they face.
