The government needs to act on rising gas and electricity bills

In some parts of Haringey, up to 30% of residents are facing fuel poverty.

This data is based on 2019 statistics, but the problem has worsened dramatically since COVID and now is set to grow, with energy prices rising at an unprecedented rate.

In April, prices are set to rise again as the new price cap sets new tariffs. Some estimate that household energy bills could increase by as much as 56%.

The Government needs to intervene

The Government cannot leave millions across the country tackling mounting debt from energy bills.

The Government cannot leave thousands of families on pre-payment (top ups) without gas or electricity.

The Government cannot leave hundreds of thousands of pensioners without adequate heating, endangering their health.

The Government cannot leave hundreds of thousands of children to live in freezing cold conditions.

Please sign our petition to ask the Government to protect low income residents from energy price hikes through a range of interventions including:

• Temporary cut to VAT on energy bills.

• Provide additional finances through our welfare system through direct payments (not additional applications which can be a barrier).

• Remove the “daily standing charge” for pre-payment customers.

• Reduce energy rates for pre-payment customers to the lowest rate available for credit based accounts.
